Fierce Gales Leave Tens of Thousands Without Power in the Island Nation

Storm damage in New Zealand
Citizens advised to avoid going out as severe gales lash the region.

Severe winds reaching velocities of up to 155km/h (96mph) have left around 90,000 properties experiencing outages and led agencies to halt more than 100 air travel services, as reported by regional news sources.

The winds are affecting the complete southern region and southern parts of the northern region, according to the national weather agency.

Officials in New Zealand have issued infrequent red wind warnings - the highest alert level - in key areas such as Wellington and Canterbury.

People have been urged to avoid going outside, stay off roads, and make arrangements for additional utility disruptions.

Widespread Destruction and Emergency Measures

This outage seems to be impacting residences mostly in the southern region, although officials say that the electricity supply was being restored progressively.

Domestic outlets have indicated that in some places homes have lost their roofs, whereas trees and electricity poles have been toppled by the winds.

In Wellington, a man was fatally injured after being impacted by a tree branch at a well-known hiking path on earlier this week.

Also in the capital, a woman was blown onto moving cars on a thoroughfare by a powerful blast, in a event that was filmed in a widely shared car camera footage.

Aircraft services to and from the urban area have been halted because of the winds, and various routes and public facilities are not operating.

At the same time authorities in Canterbury have announced a crisis declaration, to support recovery activities.

However the severe conditions has pressured them to change some of their plans, with some outdoor rallies moved indoors or cancelled.

Comparable winds are impacting the neighboring country, bringing a heatwave to the nation's interior regions.
