Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The location, identified by intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a number of entry passages down to the depot... initial indications suggest the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the strike conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established jihadist rule over large swathes of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This strike underscores the UK's leading role, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.

British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank all the members of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their valour," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were among numerous British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to take out militants who threaten our security, shows how UK forces are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure at home and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" on Daesh sites in Syria, after an attack killed two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
