The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was found guilty of orchestrating a government overthrow in the ninth month and given more than a 27-year term in prison, but he continued under home detention pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after recent developments came to light.

This included seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a call for a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his escape.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his son.

His offspring, Flávio, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or see it all from your mobile device there on your settee? I call on you to fight with us."

He said the demonstration would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of Justice Moraes's determination was the possibility of the former president's transfer to embassies near the home, considering that the probes revealed a background of planning to request asylum through a embassy office", a statement said.

The judicial paperwork highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the capital, Brasilia, is situated around 8 miles from his dwelling.

Worldwide Consequences

Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative US President Trump, leading him to implement a 50% tariff on imports of Brazilian goods.

The former president is being detained in a national police facility in Brasilia and will experience a custody hearing on Sunday.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the Top Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.

They also asked that the former president be permitted to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he required ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other health problems.

Context of Sentencing

He was convicted of leading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the national vote to his ideological adversary, Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plot which involved plans to kill the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.

The conspiracy was stopped because it didn't receive the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. His successor was sworn in without incident on the first day of 2023.

But a following week, on 8 January, many his backers stormed and vandalised government buildings in the federal district, Brazil's capital.

The security forces stepped in and around 1,500 people were detained.

The justices found that the protesters had been encouraged by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, reestablish control and return him to office.

At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also prohibited from running for public office until the year 2060 - eight years later after the end of his sentence.

The former president called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him participating in the 2026 national vote.
